A Long Way Down

Hard is trying to rebuild yourself, piece by piece, with no instruction book, and no clue as to where all the important bits are supposed to go.

A Long Way Down

Nick Hornby

Summary: Meet Martin, JJ, Jess, and Maureen. Four people who come together on New Year's Eve: a former TV talk show host, a musician, a teenage girl, and a mother. Three are British, one is American. They encounter one another on the roof of Topper's House, a London destination famous as the last stop for those ready to end their lives.

In four distinct and riveting first-person voices, Nick Hornby tells a story of four individuals confronting the limits of choice, circumstance, and their own mortality. This is a tale of connections made and missed, punishing regrets, and the grace of second chances.

My Review: Let me introduce you to my very well loved copy of A Long Way Down. When four suicidal strangers meet at the top of a London high-rise on New Years Eve, they make a pact to stay alive for 90 days. What follows is a therapy group of sorts, each of these incredibly different people come together to offer support and unconditional, familial love to one another. I love Nick Hornby books. They carefully balance heart, comedy, deep sadness, and hope, while examining the human spirit and how it evolves and changes based on those people we surround ourselves with.

Recommending age: Adult (thematic elements, language)
